Program #1: Adaptive Snow Sports at Bristol Mountain Winter Resort, Canandaigua, NY
The OASIS Adaptive Snowsports Program began in February, 2010. Each Veteran and his her support person are provided multiple instructional sessions by a team of instructors trained to work with clients who have either physical and/or emotional challenges - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). These instructors are also trained in adaptive skiing instruction through the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI). Each Veteran receives individualized instruction and, through collaboration of the Veteran and their instructors(s), their level of independence is determined. Lessons are two hours (either morning or afternoon, Tuesday – Friday) and are scheduled once a week for a period of 6 to 10 weeks. The lessons will be on the same day each week with the same team of instructors. Equipment rentals and lift tickets are provided by Bristol Mountain, and there is food provided either before or after the lesson. Skiers and snowboarders are started on beginner terrain and progress to other areas of the mountain as the student improves his/her snowsports skills. Lessons begin the second week of January and go through March and are dependent upon weather. Graduation requirements for this program are the same as all of our programs (see PROGRAMS-What We Do section).
